Lovin’ on Local – Spotlight on The Mad Herbalist

In this edition of the Lovin’ on Local series, we’re thrilled to feature The Mad Herbalist, a tea house and unique eatery located close to downtown Clarksville.

If you're looking for a unique blend of nature, wellness, and history in Clarksville, look no further than The Mad Herbalist. Nestled in the heart of downtown, this enchanting space offers much more than just herbal teas and natural remedies—it’s a destination that combines holistic healing, delicious bites, and a deep connection to the past.

A Historic Space with a Story

The Mad Herbalist isn’t just another shop; it’s housed in a historic cabin that has been a part of Clarksville’s history for over 150 years. Originally known as The Neely Home, the cabin was set to be demolished in 1968. But thanks to the efforts of Phila Hach, a local preservationist, the cabin was saved from destruction and relocated to Hachland Hills, a picturesque area that is now known as The Tanglewood House.

In 2018, the space underwent a renovation to become The Mad Herbalist. The cabin’s rustic charm, coupled with its beautiful setting, offers visitors a sense of tranquility and connection to both nature and history.

A Unique Herbal Experience

At The Mad Herbalist, you’ll find a blend of old-world herbal knowledge and modern wellness practices. Whether you're a seasoned herbalist or a curious beginner, there’s something for everyone. The shop features a carefully curated selection of loose-leaf teas, herbal tinctures, essential oils, and natural wellness products designed to support holistic health.

In addition to its retail offerings, The Mad Herbalist hosts regular workshops and classes that cover a wide range of topics—from herbal medicine making to mindfulness practices. These hands-on classes are perfect for those looking to deepen their connection to plant-based healing and learn new skills in a welcoming environment.

Tea, Treats, and Relaxation

One of the highlights of a visit to The Mad Herbalist is the chance to sit back, relax, and enjoy a freshly brewed herbal tea. Whether you’re a fan of soothing chamomile, invigorating mint, or something a little more exotic, you’ll find a selection of teas that cater to every taste and need. The herbal concoctions are thoughtfully crafted to promote relaxation, energy, digestion, and overall wellness.

For those who are feeling a bit peckish, The Mad Herbalist also offers a selection of delicious, healthy bites. From light snacks to more substantial offerings, the menu is designed to complement the wellness experience with fresh, nourishing ingredients.

Workshops and Events

Beyond tea and retail, The Mad Herbalist is a community-focused space offering workshops and events that invite guests to learn about and connect with nature. Topics vary from herbalism basics to more specialized subjects like essential oils, plant identification, and natural skincare. These workshops are perfect for anyone interested in exploring the many ways plants can enhance their lives—whether through making your own herbal remedies or simply learning more about the natural world.

The Mad Herbalist’s events also highlight the healing benefits of nature, with opportunities for guests to explore the serene grounds of Hachland Hills. The lush property surrounding The Tanglewood House creates the perfect backdrop for wellness activities and gatherings, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustle of everyday life.

A Welcoming Environment

One of the most appealing aspects of The Mad Herbalist is its welcoming, laid-back atmosphere. The team behind the shop is passionate about creating a space where everyone can feel comfortable, whether they’re popping in for a cup of tea or attending a full-day workshop. It’s not just about buying products—it’s about fostering a deeper understanding of the plants that can heal and nourish us.

The cozy, rustic cabin and surrounding property invite guests to take their time, explore, and even linger. It’s an ideal spot for a quiet afternoon, whether you’re spending time alone or connecting with friends and like-minded individuals who share an interest in holistic living.

Can’t recommend Katie Cooke and Tennessee's Elite enough! When buying our first home we had a million questions and Katie patiently answered each one (some questions a few times over!). I felt like we had someone in our corner who was willing to advocate for our best interests and who truly wanted us to have our dream home, not just any home. She was attentive, accommodating, and kind making the entire process feel like a breeze!
